Beschreibung

Lamia El-Khouri. Roman Settlements in the Region of Northwest Jordan. Archaeological Studies Land-Use and Landscape Development. Alter Orient und Altes Testament - AOAT, Vol. 353. 227 pages.

El-Khouri's handbook provides the reader with a comprehensive catalog of Roman settlements in northwest Jordan (Chapter 3), including the tiniest of ruins. An overview of the geographical and historical background can be found in Chapter 1, while Chapter 2 gives an overview of the archaeological landscape. Earlier studies of Roman times in northwestern Jordan focused mainly on urban land and paid less attention to rural locations. In order to give a more balanced picture of the Roman settlements and place the Dekapolis in their regional context, all the excavation sites were examined. The data collected is useful for creating regional maps that show the distribution of Roman settlements, the comparison between urban and rural settlements, and the type and size of places. The strategic location of the region as a bridge between the two provinces of Egypt and Syria made it attractive for the intensive colonization, not only in the Roman period, but also during other eras. Several international trade routes lead through this region. Apart from the urban population in the important centers, the region was populated by a large agricultural population.
