Beschreibung

Sami Folk Art. Ten Thousand Years of Folk Art in the North. 10000 Years of Nordic Folk Art. Tinna Mobjerg, Asger Jorn, Jens Rosing, Photography by Gerard Franceschi. 312 pages, ill.

The Sami were originaüy hunters and moved over the large area they call Säpmi in northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

It was only in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that the special Sami culture based on reindeer herding and more permanent Settlements arose. This happened at a time when the Sami were being subjected to greater pressure from the part of the population that lived farther south and made its living from agriculture. From this time come the first scholarly descriptions of the Sami, showing great regional differences among them, but also a shared cultural heritage.

With his selection of more than 300 objects Asger Jörn grants us new insight into the last 500 years of Sami history In the selection and juxtaposition of the pictures he gives us an artistic Interpretation of the interactions of the Sami, nature and the reindeer, also reflecting the fusion of ancient myths and the new religion  - Christianity -  which was encroaching from the south and east. This combination of Nordic mythology, Christianity and Sami religion can be seen in particular in the decorations on the very few preserved Sami drums.
With the photographer Gerard Franceschi Jörn depicts the landscapes and lifemodes of the Sami people from Russia in the east to Norway in the west, expressed through everyday Utility objects, jewellery and Ornaments.

The pictures were taken in 1964-65 at the museums in Helsinki and Ouli in Finland, Lulea in Sweden, Tromso and Oslo in Norway and at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. Jörn selected and grouped the pictures.Tinna Mobjerg and Jens Rosing have written the text together, as in the previously published volume in the series Folk Art in Greenland.
