Papers from an international research seminar at the Danish National Museum May 1996. The book is a result of a symposium with the same title, taking place in the Danish National Museum in May 1996. Military organisation, together with topics such as trade and religion, forms one of the cornerstones in the foundation of the State. There is a comprehensive body of archaeological material in Scandinavia reflecting military development in the first millenium AD. This development though, cannot be put into its historical context until the apperance of written sources, which is treated in a broad European perspective in this book.
